Bear’s Den Blog 1: February 2, 2021

If you would’ve asked me how I envision my life to be four years in the future from where I was in 2017, I don’t think any of my responses would have come close to where I am now. It’s been three years and some change since separating from the United States Air Force now and I’m currently writing this blog from a cliff side villa where my brother Devin and I live that overlooks one of the most prestigious surf locations in the world on the island of Bali, Indonesia. We’ve been exploring this incredible country by scooter for the last two months, taking ferry’s to other islands, surfing in Sumbawa, and integrating with some of the most loving people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being around—quite the change from the earlier years of my twenties.

A decade ago I was enlisted as a Dental Technician at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. This was my first time living away from my family which was pretty nerve racking to me as a nineteen year old, but I had never been more sure that I was taking the right path for the life my soul intended to trek. I spent the two years I was assigned there with my best friend Ty Barnes talking about our dreams and living out our day to day as young airmen who were both away from our loving families; we found familiarity within one another and were bonded as brothers by loyalty and love. He passed away shortly after our time at Kadena in his home town of Gig Harbor, Washington in 2012 in a motorcycle accident which changed my life from that point forward.

I could no longer daydream about what life could be after recognizing how fragile we all are...how fleeting life is. I learned to approach life with tenacity and to seize opportunities as they presented themselves, there’s no time to hold back. I live with Ty in my heart every day, I’m thankful for the opportunity to be inspired by such a high quality human being and as long as air fills my lungs I will be grateful for the things I’ve endured and will continue to experience during this incarnation.
